Jon Landau says Avatar 2 won’t be ready for release until 2016. This completely contradicts James Cameron’s intention of wanting Avatar 2 out by 2014 and Avatar 3 on 2015. Here’s what Landau has to say:
“According to Landau this morning, the first sequel is ‘four years away.’ So that’s 2016 by a literal count, though we could be bendy and assume that Christmas 2015 would also be an option. Expect Avatar 3 a year later, as the performance capture and cinematography would take place back-to-back with the second film.”
The one thing that Landau did agree on with Cameron is that the film will be shot at a higher film rate as Cameron wanted to do.
“Landau promised that Avatar 2 was going to showcase advanced technology, from the 3D camera system used to the CG and performance capture, but also in terms of a higher framerate. This, he says, is the new frontier that he and Cameron are most interested in pushing.”
So we’ll have to wait 4 more years for Avatar 2? That’s insane. I hope it’s worth the wait, and most importantly, I hope they stick to the plan of making the film. That’s a long wait, and we’ll see if people will remember Avatar and still have the excitement for it in 2016. But if this film does come through, knowing James Cameron, he’s not going to disappoint and Avatar 2 will be a a marvel.
